A common question many patients ask is what age their child should start orthodontic treatment. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that all children see an orthodontist at age seven! Although not all children will need treatment that young, it is important to establish a relationship with the orthodontist to ensure that treatment begins at the right time for each individual child.

Seeing the orthodontist at age 7 allows us to evaluate each child when the teeth and jaws are still growing and developing. X-rays will show us if there are any permanent teeth missing or forming in an abnormal position, or if there is not enough space for the permanent teeth to erupt.

Early, or Phase I orthodontic treatment helps to prevent more severe problems from developing later. Through the use of orthodontic appliances, such as expanders, partial braces, and retainers, early treatment helps to guide jaw growth and creates a better environment for the eruption of permanent teeth. Treating at an age where the bones are still soft and pliable allows for quicker and more effective corrective procedures that help to create the best possible outcome for your child's orthodontic treatment. Although phase I treatment does not mean that the child will not need a second phase of orthodontics, it will ensure that the second phase is less complicated and can be completed in a shorter amount of time.

Signs that your child may need Phase I treatment:

  1. Underbite

  2. Protruding teeth or overbite

  3. Posterior crossbite

  4. Early or late loss of baby teeth

  5. Thumb sucking or oral habits past the age of 5

  6. Crowded or misplaced teeth

  7. Difficulty chewing or biting

  8. Jaws that are out of proportion to the rest of the face
